Dixie

Perhaps life is taking me to different places, but I get the impression that public displays of the Confederate flag are waning. I'd like to think that most people who wave the rebel flag- most often on vehicles and t-shirts- aren't racists. They're simply indicating their allegiance to what they perceive to be Southern self-reliance, independence from Yankee elitism and a general anti-authoritarian bent. Even so, the powerful symbol never fails to take me aback.

Unfortunately, I think that just the opposite is true.

I think the people you describe are intelligent enough to have long since realized that the Confederate flag has a weight, a meaning and tons of historical baggage that far out-weighs any connotation of "Southern self-reliance, independence from Yankee elitism and a general anti-authoritarian bent". They have enough sensitivity to these issues to no longer display it in public.

Consequently, the only ones left who still INSIST on displaying it are the virulent rascists who display it as an open insult and defy anyone who doesn't like it to get past their fences, their pit bulls and their personal arsenal to say anything to their mullet wearing ass about it.

I always thought that they were trying to alert everyone that they are big losers, and they're willing to display the flag of the losers of the Civil War.

After all, the South did get its ass kicked in a fight it started . . .
