The Ugliest Americans

I won't be able to resist posting about my trip to London, but I'll attempt to do so in a way that relates to life here in Kansas City. Naturally, I'm obligated begin with a signature Happy In Bag topic, the contemptible American squirrel. This amazing story explains that Britain's native red squirrels are endangered by the aggressive behavior of these nasty imports. London's dazzling public parks are overrun with the pests. I looked on with incredulity as locals lovingly catered to their wicked ways.

    London, eh?
I was wondering where you'd scampered off to.
Though perhaps your scampering was minimal.
    Can't wait to hear more.

London is one of my favorite cities. Too bad the non-indigenous squirrels are ruining the balance, such as any environmental balance can be achieved in such a dense urban area. Here's hoping you avoided the tourist crap and found a pub serving real ale.

I recall spotting freaky-looking squirrels in Toronto, Spyder.

Hey UL! Maybe it's time we meet up in the real world. (Shudder.) If you're up for it, email me at happyinbag(at)gmail(dot)com.

In England I have never seen the native Red Squirrel, and at home here in Ireland only two times have I seen the little fella. Smaller, seemingly faster, and much shyer, they have long been pushed out of their natural habitats.

When I tried to explain this in KC most people mistakenly thought I was talking about a red version of the Grey species, but the little red European chaps are truly a treasure, if an almost lost one.

    Oy.
I was so afraid you'd see my post admitting nourishment of such rodents.

    Guilty.

That's extraordinarily saddening, Irish. I hate to admit it, but I actually like Potter's Squirrel Nutkin, if only because she painted the character so unflatteringly.

I apologize for leaving such a "cranky old man"-style comment on your site, Pom.

I have pictures of the black squirrels in Toronto. Much bigger than our 'friendly' little grays.
