Mishap Miracle

Each time I encounter an automobile accident I marvel that there aren't more mishaps. Between teenagers, tailgaters and tyrannical truckers, it seems that every safe journey is a minor miracle. Not a day goes by when someone doesn't come dangerously close to sideswiping or bumping my car. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and my eyes wide open.

You know, if the first cars were being invented in today's safety conscious, litigeous society, there is NO WAY it would look like it does today. Big boxes of glass and metal hurtling down the road at 70mph just inches apart? With a stoned 16 year old talking on his cell phone in one and an 80 year old lady with nothing but gloved knuckles showing above the car seat in another?

Huh uh. Not to mention the environmental impact statement.

Nope. We'd still be on horses.
